Welcome to Barnby Dun Cricket Club

Barnby Dun 2nd XI 2009

Barnby Dun 1st XI 2009

Barnby Dun Cricket Club was formed in 1870 and has been a founder member of local cricket leagues over a number of years. Famous former players include Johnny Wardle, the ex-England spin bowler, and the club has consistently produced a steady supply of young cricketers to the Yorkshire schoolboy and representative teams in recent years. Junior cricket is thriving in the club with teams at U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17 levels providing opportunities for over 70 youngsters. The club also runs 2 senior teams in the Pontefract League and a Sunday league team at the weekend. The wicket and outfield have been much improved over the last few years, thanks to the excellent work by our award winning groundsman Bill Barnes, comparing favourably with any in the area, and the ground has tremendous potential for future development. We are currently working with the Parish Council to develop a much needed new changing facility on the ground which will provide up to date changing rooms with hot showers and a comfortable and clean social room for the traditional teas. Presentation Night 2009 is Friday October 9th 7.30pm at Glasshouse pub- don't miss it!

Two great wins at the weekend!

Pavilion - see latest design!

The 1st XI pulled off a great win against local rivals Conisbrough at home on Saturday, gaining 10 pts and a much needed move up the league table. Batting first, Con-isbrough struggled to make headway and could only finish with an all out total of 101, thanks to some great bowling by Barry Smith (4-15) and Mark Nurse (4-12). The 2nd XI continued their excellent run with a win against mid-table Thurnscoe, their sixth straight win. Bowling first, Barnby Dun restricted Thurnscoe to 149-8 and managed to secure a win by scoring 150-3. This shows how the side have developed this season to become a much more balanced side who are looking like good promotion contenders!

National award for Bill Barnes!

The plan to link up with local developer Urban i to build the new pavilion is still in place but the general economic downturn has meant a revised timescale. A start will not now be made on the pavilion in the immediate future, but is still part of the 106 planning agreement. Discussions with the Pontefract League have taken place and they have accepted our proposal to install a new modular building for the new season. This will be connected to mains services and provide high quality changing facilities with toilets and hot showers, and a much needed all-in-one tea room with kitchen galley, ladies & disabled toilets and indoor eating area. Discussions with the Parish Council are now in progress. Let's look forward to the new challenge in Division 1!

Our groundsman Bill Barnes has been recognised in the 2008 Groundsman of the Year awards, sponsored by cricketworld.com by receiving a commended certificate for groundsmen across the UK. This award recognises the tremendous effort, hard work and high standards achieved in the recreational game throughout the year. Here, local MP Rosie Winterton presents Bill with his award at the cricket ground supported by junior players in the club from nearby Hungerhill School. Well done, Bill, for doing such a great job with the ground! -view slideshow...
